Pauses in word 2002 during typing

When I'm typing something in Word 2002, the "software" sometimes "can't keep
up with my typing" (so to speak). I mean there's often a hesitation before
the last letters in a word appear on the page. But as soon as I "move ahead"
to another word, then the last letters of the previous word instantly appear.

I never had this problem with XP and Word '97, but I have a new computer
with Vista and I've moved from word '97 to 2002. I've got a fast computer
and 2 megs of Ram. My word 2002 comes from a brand new Works Suite 2006. I
reinstalled my word 2002 several times, but it made no difference.

I write children's novels for a living, so this is more than just a small
annoyance for me. Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated.

What happens if you start Word in safe mode (that is, hold Ctrl as you start
the application)? Does it then work correctly?

Hi Stefan. I went into the safe mode, as instructed, and my word worked
pefectly--i.e. no pauses. I don't know what this implies. I didn't know
there was a safe mode in Word.

Hi Again Stefan.

Does the absence of "pauses" when Word is in the safe mode give you any
insight into the source of the problem--and a possible correction? Or are
you suggesting that I should do all my writing in the Safe Mode in order to
do an end run around the problem? If the latter is the case, is working with
word in the safe mode exactly the same as working in the normal mode?

By the way, I did a search for normal.dot and nothing came up. I think this
might be a little odd. Note that I've reinstalled my word 2002 several times
and the same "Pause error" persisted.
