Word as default for email composing?

I have MS Word set to do my email composing. I notice when I use Word for
this there is no option to insert a signature as that seems to be only
available from within Outlook. Is there a workaround for this? Am I
missing something?

What version of Word do you have. Outlook 2003 only supports Word 2003.
