Word 97- I cannot activate any custom dictionaries

Using Word 97- I cannot activate any custom dictionaries.

If I go to [Options][Spell & Dictionary] and choose the [Dictionaries]
button, I get a list of dictionaries inlcuding Custom.Dic. I then tick the
checkbox to the left. This should activate the dictionaries but after I click
<OK> it does not appear in the [Custom Dictionary] Box and is not activated

If I create a NEW dictionary the same problem occurs

Is this happening with just one, or certain documents? Or is it also happening
with new documents?

If you click in some text, then go to Tools/Language/Set language: which
language is selected?

Are any of your dictionaries language-neutral ("no proofing" instead of a
language such as English US)? If you try to activate a "no proofing" dictionary,
is that accepted?

Do you have any dictionaries with a language that matches the language you saw
in the Set language dialog box?

Would language-neutral dictionaries be considered "no proofing"? In Word
2003, Custom.dic is set to "All languages." But it's been a long time since
I used Word 97, too.

??For which exercise??

At this point, I can only remark that custom dictionaries
must match the language in the document exactly. If the
document language is set to English(AUS), then the
dictionary must be, as well.

"No proofing" dictionaries, however, should be acceptable
for text formatted in any language (except no proofing),
which is why I asked you to try that.

Hmm. Australian English was something of a step-child a
decade ago. How about if you go back to basics: Ctrl+A,
then apply English(US) as the language. The go to the
dialog box and ADD a new custom dictionary in English (US).
Does that work?

I tried but that but it didn't work.

The only other thing I can suggest, given the old version,
is to uninstall the entire Office suite. After you
uninstall, check in the folder where the Proofing tools
currently are (*.lex files) that everything has been
removed (your *.dic will probably still be there; move
anything you find to a "backup" folder).

Now reinstall Office and see if things are any different.
If the problem is caused by a damaged Office file, this
will, with some luck, take care of it.
