XP has no native ability to read WORD files.

You need a version of Microsoft WORD, which is sold separately.

Versions of WORD (really Office) that work with XP include 97 (with SP2 for
Office), XP, 2003.

You might also see whether Microsoft offers a free WORD-reader, possibly
called a WORD-viewer.

Open Office is a free alternative to MS Office, and its program called
"WRITER" can open and even edit WORD files, as well as several other
formats. Open Office is free from:

By the way, is the real problem "opening" the files, or "copying" them to
hard drive? Floppies can and do go bad over time. Further, even a good
floppy that is written on one machine may not be readable on another
machine, if the floppy drives are each slighly out of adjustment in opposite
direction. Such adjustments are not a thing a user can fix.
