Word 2007 - Word Options Changing

In Word 2007, users have repeatedy unchecked the Hidden Text checkbox found
in Word Options > Display > Always Show These Formatting Marks On The Screen
section, but Word re-checks the Hidden Text checkbox on its own. The Hidden
Text checkbox must be unchecked (so that hidden text does not display) while
running a Table of Contents or Table of Authorities, or the non-hidden text
adds extra pages to the document, messing up the page references in the TOC
and TOA. Does anyone know why this option won't stay unchecked? It’s
causing many problems in my firm. Thanks in advance.

If you are marking entries for a TOA, then I need the Hidden Text
showing so I can modify it to adjust page numbers, formatting, etc. Why
don't you just teach your users to turn off the hidden characters before
updating the TOA or the TOC? CTRL+SHIFT+* is not a hard keystroke
combination to use. Also the Home Tab has the Show/Hide command located
in the paragraph group.

button is still checked. And the basic root of the problem is that Word is

I misunderstood - I thought you DID NOT want to show the Hidden Text,
ever.

If I remember correctly, that option can be set by Policy. Did your IT
department install Office 2007 using an SMS installation point? If so,
you probably need to discuss with whoever did the installation. When
something is set by policy there are typically two options. The first is
that the ability to make the change is completely grayed out and
unavailable. The second is that you can make the change on a Word
session by Word session basis. So every time you restart Word, the
policy is re-enforced.
