Word 2007 equations: suppressing underscore->subscript autoformat

Word 2007 equation editor introduced a new fast way to enter subscripted
text: you type an underscore (low line, this character: _ ), type the text to
be subscripted and press space.

This is causing major havoc when working with equations whose variable names
contain underscores. I dont have the option to change the variable names. How
do i supress this form of auto-formatting?

A really silly workaround is to use a different character from the ASCII
table which looks like an underscore (the character i chose can be found on
the word symbol table, Symbol font, code 95). It solves the problem since its
a different character, therefore it wont trigger the autoformat.

Unfortunately, i already have a large number of equations carefully written
with underscore (if space is not pressed, the autoformat wont happen). I
thought of using the "find/replace" dialog to change all underscores to this
ASCII character, but since its an exotic character, it wont work with the
find/replace dialog.

Hi Claudio,

I'm not clear on the variables as to how you're presently applying an underscore that would kick in the subscript autocorrect. Are
these single character variables or something else?

Are you underlining (applying formatting) to the variables or can you use an underbar or ?

For example if the variable is an underscored c
type in the math region

\underbar
space
c
space

If you just need an underscore character between two other variable characters (i.e. a_c) you can type "_" then space with the
underscore in quotes, to get a literal character, then type your next varible character.

You can also turn off the Math Autocorrect (Alt, T, A) and use Word formatting and/or the ribbon (ofr example the Underbar choice in
the Structures=>Accent section.

The quotes solved my problem Bob, nice trick! I ended up using the strange
ASCII character for the document, but quotes will be my choice for future
reports. The reason I needed underscores is that im dealing with electricity
retailing algebric rules, which contain plenty of variables like FUEL_G or
PENALTY_ACR in equations. Thank you very much.

Although the current problem is solved, the document you suggested seems
like a very interesting read Franz. I will take a look at it.

You can also type

\_

That is, a backslash before the underscore character. This will also prevent word from "auto-correcting" the character.
