Word 2007 crashes when accessing contacts

G

Guest

I am using Windows Vista Business with Word 2002 and Outlook 2007. When I try
to use the Envelope function and attempt to access Contacts within it, Word
crashes.

Expected. Versions must match if you expect to integrate Outlook and Word.

Actually, that's not true. Word 2002 worked well with Outlook 98 in my old
computer. Is there a fix for this or is Microsoft merely forcing me to
upgrade to Word 2007?

It has always been true for every version of Office. The only exception was
Outlook 98 which was actually a short-lived interim build released between
Office versions. There is no fix. Sorry.

"Always" and "exception" are mutually exclusive. This is nonsense. Enjoy your

Reread my post. It is perfectly accurate. Outlook 98 was not part of an
Office release.

You are making a distinction between an Office release and a "short lived
interim build released between Office versions." A distinction without a real
world difference to a consumer who is just trying to earn a living. It is a
technical, "perfectly accurate" statement an attorney would make on the
behalf of a guilty client.

Word 2002 works very well on Vista. Outlook 2007 works very well on Vista.
The Envelopes/Address Book is a universally used function in Word. For
Microsoft not to make it compatible is ridiculous. It feels like they are
trying to force an upgrade without actually saying so because consumers might
balk at having to purchase new software when they are perfectly happy with
what they have already.

As for my "paycheck" reference, it sounds like you are making an excuse for
Microsoft.

There is a huge difference between an interim build of one Office component
and a new version of the entire Office Suite. I am making excuses for no
one. Every new Office version has required its component apps to be the same
version to retain integration. It has nothing to do with trying to "force an
upgrade." It has everything to do with keeping code compatible.

Re-read your email. You sound like the PC character on the old Apple
commercial. Ah yes, the integration factor of the component apps is paramount!

The point is Microsoft could have made Word 2002 and Outlook 2007 compatible
so that the Envelope address function was integrated. They chose not to and
you would never know it until you tried to use the function since otherwise
the program works well.

If you think that is just about code compatibility and not money, you are
being very naive. Whatever. If there's no fix, end of story.

Well, naturally they _can_, but that's not the real issue. The real issue
is they haven't made Outlook and Word interoperate without being the same
version of ten years and I'd bet my bottom dollar they don't intend to start
doing it again.

Outlook 98-Word 2002. Also, I believe, although I'm not sure, Outlook98-Word
97... and let's keep your "bottom dollar" out of this.

Also, all that had to be said when first I asked the question was, No, it is
not compatible, no, they don't have a fix, and yes, you must upgrade to Word
2007.

Russ, reacted to the word "forced"(to upgrade). But, isn't that really the
case? You said, "Of course they can" fix it. I agree. They chose not to.
Russ is the one who came up with, it isn't about the money, it's about the
code. Please.

Finally, the fact that Microsoft extended their support of Word 2002 after
2006 for security issues only is a clear indicator how many people still use
it. And for a reason; it's very good. When purchasing a new computer with
Vista any normal consumer would assume that they would not have to upgrade
their basic programs. It should be noted and in a very obvious way. That's
all.

Hasn't this gone beyond the point of pointless? You have your issues readily defined, Microsoft has its policies, equally defined. Move on.

This is no longer a question for support, it is a question of philosophies. Bottom line, your scenario is not supported and will not be addressed for out of support software.

I bought Outlook 2007 as a stand alone. Starting at the Outlook 2007 home
page. Please walk me through where you would find it's imcompatibility with

Method for determining Office Word install

Office Outlook will check which version of Office Word is installed to
determine what features will be enabled in the Outlook e-mail editor. The
experience and features available should feel similar for users who
previously installed only Outlook and not Word. The previous release
experience was the model used to design the experience for Office Outlook
2007.

When Word is not installed on the same machine as Office Outlook 2007, or is
an earlier version of Word (Word 2003, Word 2002, Word 2000), some of the
rich editing capabilities and item manipulation functionality that rely on
Office Word 2007 are not available. The features detailed below will not be
present within the Office Fluent user interface. For more information about
the Word features described below, please review the Microsoft Office Word
2007 Product Guide (link: http://www.microsoft.com/office/word)
