When I have typed in the first line in a new document and press 'return, the
cursor goes to the bottom of the page. Why?
How do I stop it happening?

Go to File > Page Setup, click on the Layout tab, and change the
Vertical Alignment box from Justified to Top. Then click the Default
button at the bottom of the dialog, which applies the change to the
Normal.dot template (the source of settings for new documents).

Thank you Jay, most helpful, problem solved.

Thanks, I had this same problem with my Word 2002 Version and I change the
layout setting to top and it worked.
