In Start=>Programs=>Startup move the 'Office Startup Assistant' out of that folder and see if that helps.

Thanks Bob for your response.

I don't have anything in the Startup folder under Programs. But word still
loads in the background. I can see Word in the Task Manager in windows 2003
but it does not show in the task bar at the bottom of the screen (when you
open an application, it shows at the bottom of the task bar).
