word 2003 will not let me create or edit a document

the create a new document is grayed out and when i try to edit an exsiting
document it tells me the modifcations can't be saved because the document is
locked but i never locked anything
 
Sounds like "reduced functionality mode" either because you have not
activated your Office software or because you have an expired trial version
of Office 2003. What happens if you start Word and then click on Help |
Activate Product?
