Word 2003 view footer not functioning

Problem creating footer. Using the header/footer option in Word 2003 (in
print view), the Headers open normally, but clicking on View Footer closes
the Header/Footer toolbar, preventing creation of a footer.

Documents previously created (using Word 2000 and 2002) with footers can be
edited by clicking directly on to the footer, but the header/footer toolbar
will only open header(s)

Let's get one thing straight: you can create a footer without use of the H&F
toolbar, though its buttons do make it easier. If clicking on Switch Between
Header and Footer (there is no View Footer) closes the footer pane and
returns you to the document (as implied in another post), then this is a
serious problem, but if it just closes the toolbar, that's a different (less
serious) problem. You can force the H&F toolbar to be displayed, but if the
header pane is closing rather than switching you to the footer, then it's
possible that the Switch Between Header and Footer button has been altered
to perform the Close action, which can be repaired fairly easily.

hanks for your reply. How do you create a footer without using the toolbar
buttons? Clicking on insert/header/footer only opens the header and the
toolbar. Clicking on the insert/header/footer again closes the toolbar.

Clicking on view footer closes the header/footer toolbar and returns the
cursor to the body of the document. The installation was native ie no changes
to the functioning of word have been made deliberately.
(Using a pre existing template created in Word 2000 which has already a
footer, the header footer toolbar does not enable access to the footer, (it
works for headers). However starting with a template that has a footer, the
footer can be accessed directly by clicking. The installation is native ie
has not been altered in any way.

"Clicking on insert/header/footer only opens the header and the toolbar.
Clicking on the insert/header/footer again closes the toolbar."

Are you sure you are using Word 2003? Access to the header and footer is not
on the Insert menu in Word 2003 and earlier; it's on the View menu. And yes,
if I click View | Header and Footer twice, the header is closed (the setting
is a toggle). What you should be doing instead is clicking the Switch
Between Header and Footer button on the Header and Footer toolbar. It's the
fourth one from the right, to the left of Show Previous. This will take you
to the footer pane. Alternatively, since you are in Print Layout view, you
can scroll down to view the footer pane and double-click there.

Yes it is 2003. I should have said View/Insert header footer. And as I said
before the switch between simply switches from header to header and never to
footer.

Anyway thanks for your interest. I have solved the problem by reinstalling
Word 2003. I noticed as well that the default settings for the size of the
header and footer can make the footer invisible, although this wasn't the
problem.
