Word 2003 over VPN

I have a new VPN setup that is working well w/MS Access and Sql Server. What
is not happening at all well is the use of Word Documents over the VPN. It
is painfully slow. More often than not it just hangs. When I try and open a
document directly through a mapped drive to a folder on the server through
VPN everything grinds to a halt even though the CPU seems underutilized? And
ideas? Some settings I should try?

I have set "make local copies.." and that doesn't seem to help.
