word 2003 edit button on toolbar causes word to stop responding

word 2003 uses 100% of CPU and stops responding when I select a paste
function from "edit" on the tool bar. Copy and paste from webmail freezes
word 2003.

Freezing and slowness in Word 2003 can be due to corrupted registry entries,
misbehaving add-ins, or other corruption. I would try the steps shown here
