Create custom button

I'm trying to put a new picture on the paste special toolbar button but when
I go under tools--> customize --> Commands the "modify selection" button is
greyed out. Is there another way to change the picture. In Word 2003 the
Paste Special button is text only.

If this is Word 2003, with the Customize dialog open, you should be able to
right-click on the button and choose "Default Style," which will give you a
blank button. Then right-click again and choose "Edit Button Image," which
will open the button image editor.

If this is Word 2007, the button faces cannot be edited; buttons for macros
can be customized by choosing from among a limited selection of icons, but
ordinary commands don't permit this.

Hi Suzanne,
I am using 2003. When I right click on the "paste special" button nothing
happens. If I left click I can drop and drag the button to the toolbar. I
wondered if the right click didn't work because the "Modify Selection" button
on the "Customize Commands" screen is greyed out.

You must left-click on the command to drag it to the toolbar. Then
right-click on the button you just created (not the command in the dialog).
This gives you the menu with the commands I mentioned.

You can try using Paste Button Image, but unless your image is a 16x16 pixel
image, it probably won't work. You can, however, use Edit Button Image to
design the button image using the Button Editor.

Thanks, that did the trick. I changed the format to "Text Only in Menus" to
get the small square, then used Edit Button Image to create the button cover.
It's interesting that you can't make any changes once you finish putting the
new button on the toolbar.

You CAN change the button on the toolbar. If you change it to "Default
Style," you'll get just the button image with no text, or you can edit the
existing image, paste a new one, select one from the very limited palette
offered, etc.
