My parents are changing their computer. They have Word 2000, but the disk
doesn't say it is compatible with xp (which is what they'll have on their new
computer). What's the cheapest software that is compatible with word 2000
documents, as they want to transfer their old docs to the new computer. Sorry
if this doesn't make sense!!!

Word 2000 will work under Windows XP. There reason that it doesn't make any
reference to Windows XP is because it pre-dates it.

If they got Word 2000 preinstalled on that old computer, they cannot install
it on a new computer. OEM software dies with the computer. I would suggest
they pick up a copy of Works Suite 2000-whatever, not just Works. (I'm not
sure what the current version is, I just know it includes Word 2002.) They
won't need anything to "convert" Word 2000 docs to Word 20023 docs.

The current version is Works Suite 2006. It includes Word 2002, Works 8,
Encarta Encyclopedia Standard 2006, Money 2006 Standard, Digital Image
Standard 2006, and Streets & Trips Essentials 2006 and retails for less than
$100 (even before a mail-in rebate currently in effect). See

Pre-installed? They have a disc, which *may* be a good sign. It might
install on the new PC. Word 2000 I seem to recall was not as fussy as later
versions and does not require activation like those later versions.

If they have a Microsoft disc it will install and run on XP. Whether or not
it is legal depends on the licence with which the disc was purchased.

However, purchasing a new (really new and not just new to them) computer at
the moment they should get Windows Vista or at least an upgrade voucher for
it. I don't know whether Word 2000 will run on Vista although I know of no
reason why it shouldn't.
