Windows 2000 and Word Versions - Compatibility

I have an old work-horse computer I use for my home business that has Windows
2000 on it. I have Word 2003 on it and I wanted to upgrade the version of
Word since I have been having some problems with it (automatic file save
feature not working). Does anyone know if the new Word 2007 is compatible
with Windows 2000?

There is a feature that automatically backs up files that you are working on.
If there is a power outage or crash or whatever, the next time you go into
Word, it will open with a "recovered" file that can then be saved on top of
the older version of the file. I have it set so that it does this back-up
every one minute, which is, in theory, the most work I can lose. It is just
not working reliably now. After doing some more checking, it turns out that
this computer (which came with the business) actually has Word 2000 on it. I
have software for Word 2003. My partner had apparently bought it before she
had her stroke and I am trying to sort it out. Just putting off buying a new
computer until later this summer if I can. Thanks for your help. Martha

The autorecovery system is not a true backup. It is only an aid to recovery
in the event of a crash. It was even more hit and miss with Word 2000 - and
in any case setting the recovery time to merely 1 minute can impair your
ability to work. Far far better to simply press CTRL+S (save) every time you
stop to think.

FWIW Word 2000 is a very competent WP package and will work quite happily
when correctly configured. 2003 adds a tad more stability and a few bells
and whistles but is essentially the same product. Word 2007 is a whole new
ball game with a learning curve to match.

If Word is crashing, then investigate why using the links I provided
earlier.

The only time I even remembered there was an "autorecovery" was when I
crashed. It never seemed to affect my ability to work. Having said that, it
is obviously not working. When the weather gets hot, my computer will
occasionally freeze/crash, which is when that feature has been useful. I am
in the habit of saving my work frequently -- using the save icon, not
control-S. Apparently the save icon is not working correctly either. Unless
I actually close the file, I cannot count on the changes being there if there
is a "crash". I am going to do a work around....the original software for
the Word 2000 is nowhere to be found, so I will probably head on over to my
computer guy this week and have him reload Word 2000 for me. Appreciate your
advice.

If the PC is crashing in hot weather you would be better served getting your
PC guy to clean the dust out of the PC, check the fans are still working and
maybe uprate the heat sinks.

If Save isn't working, do you have an early version of Acrobat 7 installed?
See the last section of

other add-ins do you have that may be interfering? Reinstalling Office
rarely achieves anything useful.
