Word 2000 is there and not there.

The previous thread is also mine, but my problem is somewhat different than I
thought. (I'd love to do a batch conversion, but . . .) Here we go...

I have a new computer with Vista. I'm a writer of kid's books and for years
I used Word '97, which I loved. However, I was told Word '97 was
incompatible with Vista and so, in order to save money, I bought a registered
copy of word 2000 (with certificate of authenticity and product key) on ebay
from a very good seller. He told me it would work. Well, it hasn't so far.
I installed it and updated it with SR1a. It went into programs/office and
it's there, though I can't see it. It's also on my programs list in Start as
Microsoft Word (with a big blue W). It opens nicely and can be used to
create a document and save a document, but when you try to open them directly
from, say, explorer you get an error message saying "works cannot open this
document". The documents have a .doc extension. I thought if I got rid of
Works 8, it would work but I can't get rid of that program. I tried (and
tried and tried..) to do a batch conversion through default programs in the
control panel but winword.exe is invisible in that operation. I know it's
there but it can't be seen by the batch converter. (Yes, I've got "show
hidden files" clicked in the folders option.) I've been all through
Microsoft Office folders several times, but I can't see the word 2000
program, even though it's there.

I need help badly. This is driving me nuts. I've got to get back to work.

1. There is no reason why you can't use Word 97 with Windows Vista.
2. I see nothing substantially different about this version of your
question versus the original version from only six hours ago, other than
your quoting the exact error message (which you should have done in your
original version). The volunteers who answer questions here come from
all over the world, and it may take 24 hours or more for all of the
"regulars" in the different parts of the world to see your question.
Yammering the same question repeatedly, redundantly, and incessantly
won't win you any friends here.
3. See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=918957 "A file does not
open in the program that you expect when you try to open the file in
Office".

Problem solved. Thanks a millioin for the help.

Initially, in my first post, I thought my problem was to change the works
docs to word. Then I discovered that I --and the batch converter--couldn't
see the word program and I thought that was a different problem--and a more
basic one. So I closed the original question with thanks and posed what I
thought was a new question. I guess I only thought it was...

Sorry for all the confusion. Sorry to put everyone to all the unnecessary
trouble. I do appreciate the good work volunteers do. I've done a bit
myself during my long life.
