Won't "shut off" to Defrag.!

L

Linda

Help. This one really has me baffled! I cannot defrag my
computer (and it's in DESPERATE need!) due to the fact
that I cannot get Explorer to shut off. When I do the
Con.,Alt.,Delete while the defrag is trying to run, it
shows that Explorer is running. When I hit the end task
option, it shuts the whole computer down. I have gone in
to the Start Menu, Settings, Taskbar/Start button and
turned off both the Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer
options, but that did not help. That seems to be the only
thing running, but the computer WILL NOT defrag. Any
input would be appreciated! Thank You!!!!!

by the sound of your description, you are using a windows
9x machine (win95, win98 or winME)

in response to your problem,
dont wory. :) the Explorer you see in your end task menu
is Windows Explorer, aka windows itself. therefore if you
shut that down you will notice that windows is shutting
down. which in fact it is doing exactly what you are
asking it to do..

by the sounds of it, you are doing everything right, and
also follow the steps that Jerry M has described by
removing all the unwanted files (empty the rubbish bin,
etc - i wont go over this twice ;) )

if you still uncertain on what is going on, you can
restart your computer in safe mode by either pressing F5
at the first windows splash screen on boot up, or by
holding the right shift key from when you turn your
computer on untill windows finishes booting up.
in safe mode you computer will be running the least
possible amount of things, and you should be able to run
scandisk and defrag with no problems.

Good luck
Wal. ;)
ps fix the email if you need to contact me... grr spam..

Make sure that your screensaver is not active also . set
it to no screen saver during the defrag also have your
run a thorough scandisk.

If it is still an issue repost here and give us the
Operating system

Also be sure that you disable any tasks that might run during that
time, like Windows Critical Update - I believe the default is to
attempt to phone in every 10 minutes. RealPlayer has the same sort of
thing. You can access the Task Scheduler via Start \ Programs\
Accessories\ System Tools.
