Won't restart

We had a problem installing additional windows components, specifically,
windows faxing. Install kept saying the file(s) could not be copied, even
though the files were there.

Found a TID (278316) that said the fault was a corrupt Group Policy
database. We followed the instructions as best we could to recreate the
Policy, then rebooted.

It seemed to work. We were able to install Faxing, even did a warm restart.
To be sure, we then did a cold reboot. Bad mistake! But of course we'd
eventually have done a cold restart, like in the morning. :)

The computer would get to the splash screen and then reboot to the boot
options screen. We can get into safe mode, but that's it. Used system
restore to go back to before the Policy fix, and still would not reboot.
Used msconfig to disable all startup items, still no joy.

What could have happened, and better, how to get out of this mess?

Thanks.

Hi Bill H.,

Use a good working Backup Image to restore your computer. I suppose you
do not have a good working Backup Image plan in affect or you wouldn't
be here asking for help.

Try to repair Windows by using this method.

How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP

If the repair attempt is successful then be sure to perform the
following solution to ensure Windows Update is functioning correctly.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from
Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a
Windows XP installation

Backup plan depends. One is never sure how good it is until you need it, and
then you're a little uncertain of trying it out.

They have a disk-based backup (Seagate's backup program), and there is an
option to "restore your computer," but I wonder what other problems that
would introduce. :) And whether it would work in safe mode, or just how it
restores.

Thanks.

Just as a followup, we were able, after much work, to get the BounceBack
system to restore the computer (we needed an updated disk from the BB
folks!).

But, it is back up and working.
