won't recognize cd

when i put a cd into my driver it doesn't show up. I go to my computer and the cd-rw Drive E that I put it in shows as being empty. how do I get it to show up and how do I get it to play.

What type of CD ?

A CD-R, a CD-RW in other words one you've burned ? If so, then you didn't
finalise the CD you were burning.

If its a commercial CD, try cleaning the lens using a special cleaning CD.
Failing that buy a new one.
