Won't play data or audio cd's

I m running XP and have a problem with my CD drive. The only thing that
seems to work is DVD's. If I put a data CD or an Audio CD in the drive
nothing happens,
if I go to start and run setup I get the following...'drive not accessible.'
'The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.'
Please help. Thank you.
