Won't Network, Will ICS

G

Guest

Small network of 5 PCs. 4 identical new P4s with XP Pro (PC1, PC2, PC3, PC4).
PC1 is set to share the Internet. All PCs can browse the Internet. Problem is
I cannot get file sharing to work. I wish to share only PC2s resources. Ping
finds other PCs from any one PC. On all PCs Norton IS and XP Firewall is off.
5th PC is PII with NT4. Able to fileshare and access Internet via ICS. I am
new to asking for help, and have little time to learn the formalities, so if
I'm not following protocol, I apologise and will accept being told so
gracefully.

Kind Regards

.... is not accessible

Message: "....is not accessible. You may not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if
you have access permissions. Network path was not found."

Resolutions:
1) make sure no any firewall running.
2) make sure you have created the same workgroup, and the same username on
w2k/xp for logging on a remote computer.
3) check user's rights.
4) you may want to enable guest account on w2k/xp.
5) if you are using simple file sharing, you may try to disable it and
re-share the drive manually.
6) if it is mixed OS (win98, NT, ME and W2K/XP) network, enable NetBIOS over
TCP/IP.
7) make sure the Computer Browser service is started if all computers are
w2k/xp.
8) stop Computer Browser service on win9x, ME and NT if this is a mixed OS
network.
9) cache credential by using net use \\computername\share /user:username
command (it is better to have the username logon shared computer).
10) if you have tried enabling netbios over tcp/ip but doesn't work, you may
try to load netbeui (loading netbeui may slow your network).
11) Make sure the server service is running.
12) If you can see the share in Network Neighborhood but not access it, this
issue may be resolved by verifying that both the share permissions and the
NTFS partition permissions are correctly configured for individual user or
group access.

If you can ping each computer from each other, and you have internet service on
each, you apparently have network connectivity working. That's half the battle.

If you are using ICS to share internet service, you really should use a firewall
to protect the ICS server. With ICS, all the clients are protected from the
internet just as computers behind a NAT router (which is what ICS is). But the
ICS server is vulnerable.

You've started off properly asking for help. Just try to reply in the same
thread (using the same Subject line) whenever possible. And don't take flames
personally. This forum has less jerks than many others, but there are some real
characters here.

Is PC2 your ICS server also?

The main question is - Do you trust everybody using each computer equally, or do
you need to assign varying access ability and multiple users? If the former,
you can use Simple File Sharing, just by enabling SFS, and activating the Guest
account, on PC2. If the latter, you'll want to use Advanced File Sharing on
PC2.

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

Robert,

I would say, make sure you never connect to the Internet without
at least one firewall running in between. Without this the line
above is a killer.
