Won't log in...

My hp laptop stops at the screen you see right before it gives you the log in
screen - it's the blue screen with the windows icon in the middle. It does
not seem to be frozen, but stuck on that screen. Any idea what to do? I'm
really frustrated - I have a paper on it that I need TODAY.

I've had the computer for two years and never had this problem, and I was
having no issues before this and shut down the laptop normally the last time
I used it.

Restore from backup.

Thank you for helping! Could you briefly explain how to restore from backup?
It would help me out tremendously.
