We have an XP Home Edition with an HP Multifunction unit
connected via USB.

The computer will not boot up with the multifunction unit
connected. If the unit is disconnected from the USB port,
the computer boots. Then unit works fine if it's connected
after booting. The computer will shut down normally, but
will not boot up again with the unit connected.

Any ideas?

Thank you. p[aul

My brother had this problem. Turned out to be a cmos
setting. Check your cmos for usb settings and try
switching from on to off.
