WMV to DVD to watch on my tv, how?

If you don't want me to post this here because it is an XP group, then
ignore me or add me to your kill file.

I have several WMV files that I would like to burn to a DVD and watch on my
TV. Also, these files are about 200mb each and I want to get them off my
HDD. How do I get them on a DVD to watch on my TV, and will they look like
real movies?

You will need either an external or internal DVD Burner along with DVD
writable discs. I suggest you buy them in bulk since I assume you have never
burned DVDs before and errors do occur. You will also need a DVD burning
software to actually help you burn your DVDs. I suggest using Nero.
(http://ww2.nero.com/enu/index.html) Most likely you can just drag and drop
files in Nero and it will do all the work for you but there are times when
you have to manually to stuff on your own and it will take some research,
believe me. For more help, go to (http://www.videohelp.com). They have all
the tools and information you need to get you started. Good luck.

In addition to the hardware you will need, you will probably need to convert
your video files to another format, probably some form of .MP? file. I don't
think DVD players will play .WMV files directly.

Converting files can get pretty hairy trying to choose suitable software.
Videohelp.com is a great place to start, but it will take a bit of study.

Can't help you on your lack of 3rd party software operation knowledge.

Your ultimate goal is to convert the wmv files to a format compatible with
the DVD burning program to make a DVD movie.

The AV in DVD movies is a specific setup of mpeg2. Not just any mpeg2
format.

I have the full version of Nero. But I bet if I burn my wmv files to DVD
using Nero, they won't play in my Apex dvd player, will they. Surely there
must be something else I have to do.

I do have WinAVI converter, but when I convert the files I have no idea
where they are stored. I cannot even see in WinAVI where to change the
location of storing the files upon conversion.

You didn't say which version of Nero you have and whether you installed
NeroVision Express.

I'm Running Nero 6.6.0.8 and NeroVision Express 3.1.

After reading this response, I ran a simple test. I launched NeroVision Express
and created a DVD from a single WMV file. There was no file conversion required
on my part. Nero created the VIDEO_TS folder and all the BUP, IFO, and VOB files
necessary on the DVD.

The DVD works just as expected with both sound and video.

Like I said before, you can usually just drag and drop files in Nero (Nero
Vision I believe) and it will automatically convert for you to the correct
output format, which is Mpeg2 or something like that. I don't honostly don't
like that method so I use third party softwares to convert my files but if
you are new at it, it will do. Since you are new to it, you can do the
trial-and-error thing and see what works or not. That is why I suggested you
buy a lot of DVD disc. Also, get ready to leave your computer on for awhile
as converting files usually takes some time. I can't say exactly if that is
true for burning WMV files to DVD but I have burned DVDs files in the past
and it took awhile. Be sure that you do NOT choose the option to burn data
onto the DVD disc. It will not play back on your DVD player.
Go to (http://www.videohelp.com) for more info. and look for guides to help
you along the way.

Well, I just used Nero Vision Express 3 to put my wmv files on the dvd to
watch on my tv. Nero put a video_ts folder on the dvd. There are bup, vob,
and ifo files in that folder. The DVD plays fine on my computer, but when I
put it in my DVD player connected to my tv all I get is a blank screen and
no audio.

Works for me. I just ran another test but this time I used eight WMV files
instead of only one. It played just fine on the DVD player and on the PC running
PowerDVD 5.0.

My DVD player is a Lite-On LVW-5006 and I used Verbatim DVD+RW media.

I put the dvd in my second dvd player, which is a new ESA, and it played
fine. But when I put the dvd back into the Apex dvd player, it won't play.

Recond this is a dvd player thing or a dvd brand thing? I am using Maxell
DVD-RW.

Really weird because I have an Apex DVD player too since its relatively
cheap and can play almost anything I throw at it (might be older model, not
sure). The video TS folder thing is correct so you shouln't really have to
mess with that for now. The Audio_TS folder is usually empty so don't be
surprised at that. At least you got it to play on another DVD player, so
that means at least your DVD burner works it burned correctly. I think it
might be the Rewritable DVDs that is causing the problem in the Apex. I
can't be 100% sure because I have never used DVD-RWs before and I only use
DVD+Rs. Therefore, it could mean that the Apex DVD player couldn't handle
the RW discs. Get some +Rs and -Rs and see if they do the trick if you
really must play it back on the Apex. Good luck.

It provides you with comfort that you're using the correct procedure (this is
what your original query was about) so your problem lies elsewhere...either in
your player or the media being used.

| How is your answer helping me?

I tried the DVD-r instead of the DVD RW, and it worked. It should work with
the DVD rw too, so that first one could have been a fluke. However, I am not
going to test it on another DVDrw. I will just keep using the DVD r.
