is there a free way to convert .wmv files to .avi or .mov
files??

WindowsMoviemaker can convert wmv to avi. Bring your wmv as a single clip,
and File->"Save Movie" as DV AVI.


If you are looking for external utilities. Consider STOIK Video converter
