WMS Idle not responding & Outlook 2003 hangs on startup

I have been having problems with Outlook 2003. Outlook has been hanging
and I
get the following message when shutting down Windows XP Pro, "WMS Ide
not
responding".

I have been try to resolve this the last couple weeks since installing
a Linksys
WRT54G wireless router and installing Spy Sweeper 4.5, the following
day.


Outlook 2003 is part of Office Professional Edition 2003 with Business
Contact Manager, running on XP Pro SP2. I use Web based mail for now
and don't think Exchange was installed. Windows Messenger is Disabled,
although the system tray has its icon with an "X".


I first suspected the SpySweeper installation and got a solution from
Webroot to " diable Spy Sweeper " at start up". This worked for 1 or2
boots.
now it's back with the hang and the WMS Idle- not responding at Shut
Down
or Restart.


Prior to disabling SS at startup. I had tried Outlook Repair. After
Reinstalling Office a couple times I was able to get Outlook up long
enough to Disable all the add-ins. That worked for a couple of boots,
then both WMS Idle stopped responding again and Outlook won't start
after reinstalling again.


I don't have the knowledge to interpet the Event Log, although I did
notice a warning related to "MSSQL$MICROSOFTBCM".


If anyone with experience with this issue could provide insight I would
greatly appreciate it.

Is Norton Internet Security or Norton Antivirus installed? If it is then
disable the email plug-in.

Thanks vey much. I have had Norton Internet Security 2005 installed for 1
year without a problem. I Disabled Email scanning, Spyware/ Adware Scanning &
an Office plug-in. I had reviously Disabled all add-ins in Outlook.

Outlook2003 now runs ok after starting in Safe Mode.

I do how ever still have the continuing problem with WMS Idle not responding
and hangup of the shut down of the system. Is it best to continue this thread
here or is the Windows Messaging Subsytem problem better posted else where?

I'll discontinue the thread in Outlook Installation and Configuration.

I'm not really sure on this. It would seem something is holding the
subsystem open.
How much of an issue is this if Outlook runs ok?

If Outlook stays up and it doesn't effect anything else it probaly is not
that big an issuse. My main concern, after trying a number of fixes, is that
WMS Idle malfunctioning could cause more problems. I use this computer for
business, so it is important to me to keep it performing well. It's peculiar
that so many people experinence this error, but there is so little
documetation on resolutions.

Does this WMS Idle error mean that Outlook is looking for an exchange sever?
I have only a limited IT background. I have always used web based email on
this machine, until I develop more knowledge to manage something more complex.

No - I don't think it has to do with looking for Exchange. I think it should
be ok (but annoying) as it is. You can try a new profile via the mail icon
in Control Panel and see if that helps at all. I still tend to think it is
due to some add-in or an application that integrates with Outlook.

Well, I spoke too soon. This morning Outlook Hung first on start, then again
in Safe Mode, so I'm back to solving the two conditions again.

I do have Scansoft PDF Converter 3 & Omnipage 14 Add-ins in Word 2003. I
also installed Bounceback Express & DiscWizard a week prior( 3 wks ago) to
installing the Router, which came with a Seagate External Hard Drive.

Would the Event Log or Config.sys help to establish what process might be
contributing to this?

the event log might give some more info. Scansoft might be a culprit. I
think it has a level of integration with Outlook. That should be disabled in
Safe Mode though. If you havent' already then try a new profile.

When you say try a new profile, are you suggesting adding a new profile, in
addition to thr existing one, or deleteing the existing profile prior to a
new one.

As I mentioned eariler, I haven't been usig Outlook for email, I've been
using sbc.yahoo web based email.

I did add a new profile, choosing not to include email, but Outlook hung
again. The only way I seem to be able to get it to start, for 1 or 2 times,
is to reinstall it with the CD in the Drive.

I'll continue looking for other programs and add-ins that may associate with
outlook. Thanks again

Create the new one first to see if it works. If so, then you can delete the
old one.

via the Mail icon in Control Panel. Create a new profile and either set that
profile as default or prompt for the profile to be used. Adding a new PST is
entirely different to creating a new profile. A new profile starts
completely clean.

On 05/13/06 I tried creating a new profile by Control Panel>Email>Show
Profiles> Add(added outlook2)> Canceled Email Setup (it said if you want to
create a profile with no email accounts, clink OK).

I started Oulook and it hung up again.

Today, 05/15/06, I tried to start Outlook and since it had tried to start in
Safe Mode last time, it asked if I wanted to run Detect and Repair, I chose
OK. Whe it had finished it said "Microsoft Office Small Business Edition 2003
Setup Completed Successfully".

Athough this machine came loaded with Microsoft Office Small Business
Edition 2003, I don't recall ever trying it since I had "Microsoft Office
Professional Edition 2003 with Business Contact Manager". XP Pro and a few
programs recide on the Hard Drive in a separate partition for restoration.

Previously when running Dectect and Repair or Reinstall I have doso with Add
Programs>Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003. Although Microsoft
Office Small Business Edition 2003 is locate just below it in the menu.

Could this be contributing to the problem? If so is there a way to remove
it(ie.Control Panel> Add or Remove Software)?

I haven't yet been able to get Outlook up to recheck a 2nd time that all the
add-ins got removed successfully.

Well I may have hit on something this time. I rebooted and ran Reinstall
again. Outlook started and asked to choose a profile. I chose the Added"
Outlook2". This worked great, until I was using IE 6 and inadvertantly
clinked on an email address. This brought up an Outlook message pane which
froze, as well as Outlook itself. When I Shut down I got The WMS Idle not
responding again

So I started again and Reinstalled Outlook again. This time when it came up
I checked on the add-ins.

Addin Manager had Exchange Extentions property pages, but the box is
unchecked.

Com Add-in had Norton Antispam Plugin; Outlook Backup Addin & PDF Converter
3.0 Oulook Addin; ALL of which had NO X's in the boxes. I tried to remove the
Com Addins, but every time I check they're there, although Unchecked.

At this point I've opened and closed Outlook with the #2 Profile several
times and Shut down and restarted WITHOUT GETTING WMS IDLE NOT RESPONDING!!!

To tell you the truth it is difficult to say What I did differently. The
add-ins are still there although unchecked. Reistalling this last time took
longer than usual. I'll let you know how it goes.

I presume that my Original Profile of no use. I'm a bit hesitant to try to
use it to recover the Calender Dates. Any suggestions?

I guess my last post was a bit long winded. Last night shutting down WMS
Idle not responding reappeared. Today, 05/16/2006, Outlook again hung up as
it started and is none responsive. I've decided to try removing the Trial
Version, Office Small Business Edition. I see that seems to be recommeded.

As I mentioned last, I can uncheck the Add-ins in Outlook, but the names
remain with unchecked boxes. Is it possible to remove them entirely, if so
how? I checked them and clicked remove, but they keep reappearing.

I Removed Trial Version Office Small Business Edition. Outlook Hung. I
Reinstalled Office Pro, it hung again. So I Reinstalled again and it started
with the new Profile Oulook2. I've opened it and closed it several times, OK,
I still get WMS Idle not responding on Shut Down. We'll see what happens this
time.

When you say Open the .PST file and copy it to the new profile, just how do
you go about that?

You can follow Bill's advice or you can do it from Control Panel's Mail
applet, which is what I prefer. Add it with the Data Files button, then use
the E-Mail Accounts button to make it the default delivery location. When
you start Outlook it will use your old PST as it did in the original
profile.

Thanks Brian. I'll have to wait on the transfer of .PST as Outlook 2003 is
Hanging on Startup again.

Yesterday I really thought I had this problem solved. I left the computer
on, had dinner, and came back to it in typical Standby, after 20 min. I used
IE 6.0, then IE wouln not close. I had left Outlook running, so I tried to
close it and Outlook would not close either. Task manager wouldn't close
either of them. I tried to Shut Down, but it hung up on Logging Off, so I
pulled the Plug. ---Started up again and Outlook 2003 started OK.

Now this morning, Outlook would not start in regular or Safe Mode. Back to
Square One, 2 weeks ago, although I have learned a few things from you guys.

Would it be politically correct to post this in other Usenet forums to get
more exposure? As you and others have seen, there doesn't seem to be very
consistent solutions to this and what you do find are alot of questions will
no solutions.

On the whole, it's not a good idea to multipost. However, if there are
other non-Microsoft newsgroups or forums (like Yahoo! Groups), certainly it
would give you a wider exposure to post there as well.

File | Open .. Personal Folder file. browse to and select it.
Ad-ins can be uninstalled via the add/remove entry in Control Panel.
