WMP10 stopped playing .avis - XP problem?

My Media Player 10 has suddenly stopped playing .avi files, including divx,
3ivx, etc. It plays .mpeg files ok (up to now), but with .avi files they
load into WMP
then when it says it is playing them all there is is a black screen all the
way to the end of the file. Divx player plays .avis ok. I've gone into
options>file types and made sure the avi file box is checked.

The only change I've made recently was to install all available Windows XP
security updates from the windowsupdate site.

What has happened to my WMP10 and how can I fix it?

I fixed the problem myself by installing the latest FFDShow codec.
