WMP is not detected even though it's installed

Hi there,

I need some help with this. I have installed WMP11 in my new laptop which
comes with Vista. However, even though I have installed WMP11, when i try to
stream videos in CNN, it says "No Windows Media Player detected" and their
video streaming will only work with WMP 9 and above. I have WMP 11.

Also, when I tried to reinstall, it says that I already have WMP higher than
the one I want to install and thus the process cannot be completed. So I
tried to uninstall programs but when i looked at the list, I can't find WMP
anywhere.

Please help me solve this, I'm raking my brain. What should I do when I
can't even uninstall to reinstall?

WMP11 is part of Vista.
You cannot install another version nor delete the current
version.

Addendum

WMP11 is part of Vista except the 'N' version for the EU.
If you don't have the EU version I would suspect you
may have to boot from the DVD
and do a repair >-repair my system to get the inbuilt
WMP11 to work.

Someone with more experience with WMP may have an easier way.

That's interesting, I hadn't heard of the N version.
I live in the EU & my version of Ultimate installed WMP by default & it
works fine.
Is this a version one has to hunt around for, or should it be the default
copy on store shelves?

I am just wondering out of interest as I am happy with WMP..all I use it for
is to sync my Zen player.

Thanks.

See here

The 'N' version was an initiative of the European Union that
didn't like MSFT's Digital Rights Management (DRM) restrictions.
So MSFT (Microsoft) was forced to bring out a full working
version of Vista, but without the Windows Media Player.
I'm pleased to see that you are happy with your version &
Windows Media Player is working as it should.
Where did you get your Vista (dvd) from ? or did it come
pre-installed from a retailer. If so, they may have installed
a non EU version.
I'm really not sure if (all) versions were N versions in the EU.
I will stand corrected if someone advises me differently.

I will have a read of that, thanks.
My copy of Vista is OEM ultimate, bought from a UK store.
I'm not complaining as it all works ok, just interested though...thanks.

Try right clicking on the IE explorer icon in the quick launch toolbar, then
click on "Run as administrator". Another way that works for me is to disable
UAC, but I don't think that is a good idea for the long run. It seems many
people are having a problem with media player not running unless you start it
with "Run as administrator", myself included, but if I switch to another User
it works fine. I hope a fix comes out for it soon as it is annoying having to
start programs with a work-around.
