When I go Start/Control Panels and click on Add/Remove, I
see that Hotfix 828026 for Windows Media Player is
credited with a file size of 619.00Mb, which is huge!

Also, instead of having the standard Hotfix icon (a
monitor), it has a fox's head which is the icon of
another non-Microsoft program installed on my computer.

When I downloaded and installed 828026, I did so after
switching off everything in the System Configuration
Utility. So, there could not have been any conflicts.

Why has it such a huge size?

How can I fix this?

Many thanks.

Hi

That Update should be 5.39 MBs. Uninstall that Update via %systemroot%\$NtUninstallQ828026$\spuninst\spuninst.exe - then go back to WU and re-install the Update. I have no idea how you are seeing 619 MBs - does it show that amount in the above mentioned folder?

Hi

The size indication in the Add/Remove Programs list is not to be trusted...

Will,

Thanks for that.

I uninstalled the update by deleting the NtUninstall
directly. I then deleted the hotfix from the list in
Add/Remove.

However, now when I go to Windows Update, it is not
detecting that 828026 is missing and prompting me to
download.

As it happens, the size in C;windows/Nt was correct. It's
only in Add/Remove that it is given incorrectly. But,
also the icon is wrong. There is obviously some sort of
conflict.

What should I do now?

Many thanks

The reason that wu isn't detecting a missing update is because it isn't
missing. When you deleted $NtUninstallQ828026, you deleted the info
needed to uninstall the hotfix. You then simply removed the entry from
the add/remove list. The hotfix itself is installed.

You may want to try visiting the Catalog at the Windows Update website, go
to your operating system, click on Critical Updates and Service Packs, and
scroll all the way to the bottom. You should see an entry for "Update for
Windows Media Player Script Commands (KB828026)". Click the Add button,
then click the "Go to Download Basket". Download the file and run the
installation routine.

As a sidenote, it's always wise to run an uninstallation routine given the
opportunity; it clears various things that deleting doesn't (registry
entries, file associations, etc). I would recommend running the uninstall
if this issue ever comes up in the future.

There is a utility that Microsoft has published. qfecheck lists out the
statuses of the KB/Q patches and tells you which are missing and/or need to
be re-installed.
