WMP 11 will not terminate sound

I am running WMP 11 in Vista Ultimate. When I select the media file from the
explorer only the sound will play but no WMP 11 will appear. If I start WMP
and the select the file it will show and play but when I terminate (exist)
the program the sound will not stop. The only way to get rid of the soudn is
via task manager and selectining to end the process.

Any idea. Help is appreciated.

TIA, Armin

I've seen this before on another computer, I never did take the time to
figure out why. Once I changed my machines to use Media Monkey instead
of the horrible WMP11, I haven't experienced that problem.

Thank you and this will help me with my music files but what about my video
files.
I have the same problem in WMP 11 with avi, divx, mpeg and mp3 files.

Thank you. However, I am wondering what the root cause is for this issue and
would like to know what happened to cause this.

BTW: Thanks for Media Monkey suggestion. I like it.

I'm typically that way, too- I have to know the "why' before
I can move on. But, since the problem was on a machine that
wasn't my main computer, it didn't bother me that much. And, since
I rarely use WMP11, and set its defaults to something else- I didn't
spend much time trying to figure it out. WMP10 was the last media
player I used often. I just don't like WMP11. I also had a very aggravating
experience with it and my purchased music from what used to be MSN
music. I will *never* again purchase any DRM protected music. Never.

Michael, et al;

Sorry, I can't let go. I read in some newsgroups that the WMP is actually
minimized and hiding behind or outside the screen or so. I closed everything
but can't see it. When I do the Widows key and tab I actually see a small WMP
window.

Any idea if there is a way to bring it to the foreground besides running it
in non-minimized mode?

Thinking about it I believe I minimized WMP before this started.

If you right-click on the taskbar option for WMP, can you use Move to move
it back onscreen... ? Does it show up on the task bar at all... ?
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#offscreen

The problem with that theory is that WMP should be exiting cleanly on
shutdown (and stopping sound) unless something else is running and has a
reference count on the player - or unless some device isn't shutting down
properly.

What sound card and video card are on this system? Since you're seeing this
for audio-only content : is there an audio card driver available from your
vendor... ?

It is for everything. Music - you hear the music only. Video - you hear the
voices and no picture.

Yep, that's exactly what I was meaning. If it happens with audio-only
content, that presumes that it would happen with video files *too*, but that
video is not of primary interest here. So all my previous suggestions still
apply. =)

What happens when you try those angles?

Well, I found that the taskbar was enabled and when I disabled it the problem
stopped and sound was terminated.

I do not understand what enabled the taskbar and I am sure it wasn't me.

Anyway, when the taskbar is enabled why doesn't the player show? Is this a
bug?

OK. The probelm is resolved. I unchecked the the Windows Media Player on the
taskbar. The I ran under "Run" as administrator

regsvr32 "%programfiles%\Windows Media Player\wmpband.dll"

and then

%windir%\system32\regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wmp.dll

then I enable the Windows Media Player on the taskbar again and when i
minimize WMP I have it sitting on my taskbar. When I terminate program
sounds stops.
