WMM 2 / MS Win XP SP3 - Crashes !

N

newWMMuser

I have an IBM T61 - Physical Mem Avbl = 2 Gig. HDD = 120GB (Free Space =
80GB). OS = XP Proff version 5.1, SP 3. I have WMM 2.0.3312.0 installed on
the system. WMM starts fine. I can import a video clip (.mpg format.
Properties = Type of file is Inter Video media file. Runs with = WinDVD) fine
into WMM. Once I drop that clip into the storyboard, the application crashes
- EVERYTIME. I get the usual MS Error msg "Error encoutered, report/not
report (this is not verbatim)" etc. I looked through the internet for
solutions and came across PapaJohn's page.
1. Suspecting that codecs could be the issue, I've renamed iviaudio.ax =>
iviaudio.ax__ & ksproxy.ax => ksproxy.ax__. - No success !!!
2. I've also reduced the HW Acceleration to the 3rd notch. (Note: I've not
restarted my laptop at any time, only WMM). - No success !!!
3. I've disabled "Show Window contents while dragging" from the Control
Panel/System/Performance tab - No success !!!
The Event Viewer Error Msg = Faulting application moviemk.exe, version
2.0.3312.0, faulting module comctl32.dll, version 6.0.2900.5512, fault
address 0x0006d0dc.
I believe I'm using WMM 2.0. But since I have SP 3, I should have WMM 2.1 -
which I don't !!! ???. I have reached the edge of removing WMM 2.0 from my
system using a script I found on the Internet:
Open Notepad.exe
Copy the following into it:
@echo off
del "%SystemRoot%\system32\dllcache\*wmm*.dll"
del "%SystemRoot%\system32\dllcache\moviemk.exe"
del "%ProgramFiles%\Movie Maker\*.*"
rmdir /s "%ProgramFiles%\Movie Maker"
pause

Save it as abc.bat
Restart your computer in safe mode
Run abc.bat
When prompted whether to delete, type "y"
When finished restart computer.

But I haven't done it since I'm not 100% sure of the consequences of running
the script. I know the batch file is removing only WMM files, but I've not
backed up my HDD as yet, so not taking any chances.

What should be my next steps be to make the application work on my system ?
HELP !!!

Note: I shot my first video clip 2 days back and this is my first time with
any sort of movie maker SW. And this is my first posting on any Internet
forum. ANY HELP WILL BE MUCH APPRECIATED !

you're heading down the right path... getting your version of Movie Maker up
to the latest v2.1

my website's Setup Movie Maker > MM2.1 page might have some more info to
help.

as your Movie Maker is already broken, I don't see anything in the script
that will do any harm to your overall system

FWIW...it seems to me you would need to
uninstall SP3...and reinstall SP2 (hopefully
this will update Movie Maker ro version 2.1...
then reinstall SP3.

Movie Maker has issues with .mpeg movie
files. Have a look at the following articles:

Thanks PapaJohn & John. Here's what I'm planning to do now:

1. Backup my HDD.
2. Uninstall WMM 2.0 - Using the script.
3. Uninstall SP3. (How should I do this ? Control Panel -> remove programs ?)
4. Install SP2 (Hopefully this will give me WMM 2.1)
5. Test WMM 2.1
6. Upgrade to SP3
7. Test WMM 2.1 again.

Am I missing anything ? Or any advise before I go ahead with my PoA ?

=======================================
Definitely.

FWIW...I use Acronis True Image Home 2009
for my backups.
=======================================
2. Uninstall WMM 2.0 - Using the script.
=======================================
Your choice but installing SP2 should update it to 2.1
=======================================
3. Uninstall SP3. (How should I do this ? Control Panel -> remove
programs ?)
=======================================
Go to...Add-Remove Programs...scroll down to:
Windows XP Service Pack 3
=======================================
4. Install SP2 (Hopefully this will give me WMM 2.1)
=======================================
You can download the file from the following link:

Generally, users install from the net but this
site allows you to download the complete
file to your hard drive before installing.
=======================================
5. Test WMM 2.1
=======================================
Good idea...Help / About...should reveal...
Version 2.1.4026.0
=======================================
6. Upgrade to SP3
=======================================
Download SP3 from following link:

All right. I'll go ahead and let you know how it went. BTW, I have WinDVD,
Nokia MM player and Apple Quicktime also installed on my laptop. I hope those
won't interfere with WMM ?

Good luck...let us know the result.

The qedit.dll error has been linked to InterVideo
but maybe you won't encounter it. I have an older
version of Intervideo WinDVD and it has never
been a problem.

Some info about it:
