wmiprvse.exe process consumes an ever-increasing amount of memory

I have Win XP Pro with SP2 installed, Microsoft Office 2003 Pro with SP3
installed along with 2 GB RAM. When I startup my laptop, it freezes for a
very long time. I hit ALT CTR DEL and it takes forever for this to open up.
Finally when it opens up, I notice that wmiprvse.exe is going wild eating up
my computer usage and my laptop is maxed out at 100% usage. When I use
Microsoft's support website to search for a answer. It keeps on comming up
with that I have Win 2003 Server and to down load this patch to fix this.
Well I don't have a server but I tried to install it and it came back and
said that I don't have the right software to patch. So I am stuck with my
laptop freezing up for long periods of time. The only way I can use my
laptop is to finally close out the tree for wmiprvse.exe and it works like a
champ then. If I have a server installed then Microsoft Updated installed
it??? I am not a expert just a normal guy trying to use a computer. Thanks
for anyone that can assist me.

I don't know if this has anything to do with it but when I use my Windows
Media Player 11, it always locks up and I have to ATL CTR DEL to turn it
off???

Tony the Tiger,

I am seeing the same thing in my XP Home Edition with SP2. Went through
exact same process as you did regarding upgrades and only found Windows 2003
server upgrade which is useless.

Really need some help on how to fix this, does anyone have an idea on how to
help?

Geegee,

No I have had zero luck on getting help and I don't think we should have to
pay Microsoft for fixing the problem that they created. So anyone out there
that can assist us on this matter. Geegee and I would be very happy if
someone like Microsoft feels sorry for their mistakes and fixes this problem.
My computer used to run fast on startup but now it is in the stone age until
I use ALT CTR DEL to turn off wmiprvse.exe finally after all the wait?
Microsoft please assist us on this matter please. Thank you very much.
