wmiprvse.exe

Whenever I boot my PC up from cold and then connect to the Internet by whole
PC slows down to a crawl for a couple of minutes and there is a lot of
activity on my hard drive with the drive access light almost permanently on.
In a bid to find out what is going on i ran the task manager to find the
program wmiprvse.exe running. Could this be the cause? Has anyone any ideas?
I'm running Windows XP.

There is a genuine Windows file of that name but it's
presence can also indicate a virus.

Update your virus definitions and run a full virus scan.
