Wma files won't open after a re-format of C drive

My daughter copied some tracks from her CD's in wma format to listen to as
she did her school work.

I recently reformatted her C drive to install WinXP. Now her wma files,
which I temporarily saved to D drive, won't run. Some notice about "licence
not available" or something like that.

1. Is there anyway to open these wma files so that they will run as normal
or are they lost forever?

2. Should she have used Nero to copy the CD files as MP3 files to avoid this
problem?

I am new to this digital music stuff, so please be gentle. Thanks.

I suspect that these files required licenses to run. The licenses
weren't backed up prior to reformatting so the files are now unplayable.

The option to copy protect the files should not have been turned on
prior to ripping them. (Tools > Options > Rip/Copy Music depending on
version of WMP). Turn that option off!!
