WLM won't connect to internet to download newsgroups

I have NewsIndividual as my newsserver. When I try to download the
newsgroups onto my new computer (Vista, HP, SP1), the message reads that WLM
cannot connect to the internet. I disabled the virus protection (Norton,
which came with the computer) and firewall, but I still cannot get to my
newsserver. Please help me.

If you need more help with WLM, you might ask in the newsgroup meant
for that WLM.

microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop
microsoft.public.windows.live.messenger

Mention which version of Windows you are running WLM under, in case
it matters.

Can you get to web pages?

I'm having the same problem with Windows Mail as with Windows Live Mail. I
am running Vista HP.

Yes, I can get to web pages. I seem to only be unable to download the
newsgroups and to logon to Windows Mail or Windows Live Mail.

What do you mean by unable to "logon"?
Can you send and receive email?

I have used the Norton Removal Tool - I am still unable to Logon to my
e-mail account and cannot send or receive e-mail. ALSO I am unable to
download the newsgroup list for NewsIndividual.NET.
Unable to send or receive messages for the Wildblue (flaxenfilly) account.
An incorrect password was entered. The next time you send or receive
messages, you'll be asked to enter your user name and password for this
account.

Server Response: -ERR [AUTH] Username and password not accepted.

NewsIndividual.NET is a subscription news server, are you registered and
paid up?

Try setting up a new news account using the following as the server address,
msnews.microsoft.com
Can you D/L newsgroups on that server?

Did you enable POP on the server?
Check out the details here, (for WLM, read Outlook Express).

I am registered and paid up with the subscription newsserver. I can download
the MS Community newsgroups with no problem. Also msnews. Wildblue has
checked all of my configurations and has released and renewed my ip. They
don't know why I can't mail or download the newsgroups.

Did you delete that Gmail account, restart WLM, then recreate the account?
That symptom often points to a corrupted mail account.

I don't know why NewsIndividual.NET won't download the list
of newsgroups. Is there an error message when you try?
Since you seem to have no problem with the Microsoft news server,
it seems to be something unique to NewsIndividual.NET. I looked at
their setup procedure, and there's nothing unusual, except for a
5 minute server time-out limit:

Disabling Norton is often not sufficient. Uninstall it, then follow up
with the special removal tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Then delete your news account, restart Windows Mail, and recreate that
account. If no joy, copy and post the exact error message.

If WM and WLM work properly with the Microsoft news server, then
the fault is not with your email program. There are several free
news servers you can try, if only for a test:

Did you follow the three steps in your provider's instructions:

When all of the settings (configurations) are correct and the messages from gmail cannot be downloaded AND the messages from the
newsgroup list from subscribed newsserver cannot be downloaded, then what????? The problem is with WM and WLM.

The OP posted in the WLM newsgroup that his email problem was
resolved by using his full email address for username,
and the newsgroup issue was resolved by changing the news server
name to all lowercase letters.

Thank you Gary, so you tell me that this poster has had the same problem
running in two newsgroups, without cross-posting to both. Sheesh!!

I posted to both mail groups because I thought perhaps the issue was with
one mail system and not the other - so I could correct the problem with the
working mail system. As it turns out, the problems were resolved using WLM.
I need to apologize for not posting the solution in this group, as well as I
did in the other. Thanks to Gary for supplying the information you needed.
