Hello

Hopefully sombody can help me!
I have just bought vista and Hp pavillion and now I need to connect to
wirelss network. I have a encrypted ssid but I have configured it correctly
manually.
The WLAN seems to show it's on, but when I take netsh wlan show interface,
the state seems to be disconnected. I've tried everything, can somebody help
me (tried to connect, it says it is not possible...etc)

Name (SSID)

Enter a value of up to 32 alphanumeric characters. The same Name (SSID) must
be assigned to all wireless devices in your network. The default SSID is
NETGEAR, but NETGEAR strongly recommends that you change your network's Name
(SSID) to a different value. This value is also case-sensitive. For example,
NETGEAR is not the same as NETGEAr.

Thats an SSID........the name of your network. There is no encryption there
Encryption is either WEP or WPA.Where you enter a "key" in the wireless
routers setup and then the same key in the setup of the wireless device on
your HP.

Hello

Thank you for your help, but I have the correct SSID (with CAPS and written
correctly) I ALSO have the correct encryption key, checked it 3 times. This
is NOT the first time I connect to my WLAN, I've done it with both XP and
2000, exactly correctly. With Vista I can't get it to work. netsh wlan....
show all the time state: disconnected. I could put a printout here about the
WLAN but it is in finnish...
The wlan is ON but the state is disconnected.
I suspect the firewall, but I have NO idea how to "disconnect" the firewall.
I have Norton in my machine.

Thanks for your help

Norton is evil and may very well be causing your issue. Here are some
things to check/do:

1. When you say the WLAN is on, how do you know? Many laptops have a
little switch or a button to push. Is the blue light for the wireless
connection lit on your laptop? If not, the wireless is not on and you
need to look at your manual or HP laptop's Help files to see how to turn
it on.

2. You don't want to turn the firewall off. You want to make sure the
connection is permitted instead. Go to Norton's configuration for the
firewall and allow the Local Area Network as trusted. If you can't find
where to do this, look in Norton's Help file or at some of these links:

Hello

I'm SOOO grateful for your help, but I still have this problem! I know my
WLAN is on due to the "button" for wlan shows blue, and when I slide the
button, Vista tells me, WLAN on and WLAN off.
Now I have added WLAN MAC address to Norton, but I still get this
information with command netsh wlan show interfaces ... state: disconnected.
When I try to connect (command netsh wlan connect name=profile1 ssid=ssid1)
the command just answers me: to profile profile1 defined network it is not
possible to connect.
As I said before, I've done this connection many times before, to both xp
and 2000 but this Vista is totally strange for me :(
I even tried with BIOS and there should be in system configuration some
place for switching this WLAN on and off... I couldn't even find that... it
only tells me the boot order... and there network adapter is ON.

I get so frustrated! ;)

Contact HP tech support. It is quite possible that the hardware is
damaged. Since this is a new machine under warranty, don't mess about
with it any more. I have lots of clients with new HP machines running
Vista and none of them experienced any problems such as yours. This
leads me to suspect bad hardware. Even having Norton shouldn't really
have prevented Internet access via wireless but it was a troubleshooting
avenue that needed to be explored.
