Wireless won't connect

I'm not sure if I'm posting to the right area but I'll go
ahead anyway.

I'm using an IBM T30 laptop with Windows XP professional
(1.6GHz mobile Pentium 4). Until this morning I was able
to connect to my home wireless network without any
difficulty. The computer has a built-in Cisco Systems PCI
wireless LAN adapter. According to the Devive Manager
this is installed and working OK (I also removed it and
reinstalled it (after trying everything else I could
think of)just in case there was a problem that the device
manager wasn't flagging. I'm sure that the network (and
access point)is OK since my wife (using a similar IBM
machine, that has a removable Cisco wireless LAN adapter
card) can connect to the network and internet without any
problems.I also tried installing her card on my machine.
It installs just fine and the Device manager indicates
it's working properly but I still can't connect (icon
is "X'ed"). A few of the other symtoms are as follows:
When I click on the "Xed" out networking icons to bring
up "view available wireless networks" the wureless
Network Connection Box appears with the "home" network
highlighted but the "Connect button" is grayed out unless
I check the "allow me to...." box--but nothing happens
after I click Connect other than the x on the icon
disappears from the icon on the task bar--still no
access. If I go to the advanced settings then go
to "Wireless networks" and click on either Refresh or
Configure nothing visable happens (i.e., I still can't
connect). Then I tried going to the control panel. If I
right click on the "Wireless network connection" in the
Network Connections section of the control
panel "status" "repair" and "delete" are grayed out. I've
tried disableing then enabling and it still come
up "X'ed " out. Oh yeah, even though I have not added
anything to the computer recently I tried rolling back XP
to yesterday when it was OK -- but it tells me that the
rollback was unsuccessful since there are no changes (I
did the roll back before I used my wifes card).

Any suggestions? I'm lost and need some help.

Thanks in advance,
Paul

Did you click "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings"? In
most cases, you should click this one.

And also, did u click "Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network"
In many cases, you should leave this unchecked.

Thanks for the quick reply. The answer to the first
question is yes and no for the second--for whatever reason
the computer is seeng the wireless network as "unplugged"
and nothing I've done to date will change that--the cable
connected netwok that is also set up (not connected at the
same time) works fine.

Well, then you have to look at what changed...did you install/remove
anything? CHange in configuration? Security options? Firewall options?
MAC filtering? Think of anything that could have changed and reverse
that.

Did you install any Windows updates? If you installed hotfix 826942, make
sure your hardware can be upgraded to firmware that supports WPA, or
remove the hotfix!

Simply the configuration by eliminating filter, firewall, security etc.
till the problem is solved, then add each feature back one by one and make
sure the network is still working.

Please write in short paragraphs...make it easier to follow your problem.
