I am trying to connect to a Wireless SMC router using WPA
authentication.However

Are you using the "use Windows to configure my wireless network settings" or
are you using software provided by your card manufacturer? I'm running XP
SP2 and use WPA -PSK to connect to me wireless connection.

If you go into Network Connection, double click your wireless network
connection, Click Change advanced settings, click wireless networks, is there
a tick in the "use Windows to configure my wireless network settings?"

If there is, go into the properties of your preferred network, what do you
see under Network Authentication?

This means that the wireless adapter on the computer does not support
WPA. All hardware must support WPA to use it. Check on the wireless
adapter mftr.'s website for firmware update to allow the hardware to
support WPA. If not available, the only way to get WPA would be to
replace the wireless adapter with one that supports WPA.

Strange -- my sp2 system handles WPA quite well. Actually, however, it is
the wireless device driver and/or controller which handle encryption types.
