Wireless Router Installation

H

HS Aaron

I am trying to install a LinkSys wireless router. A
desktop is running XP Pro and is wired to router. A
laptop is using wireless LAN adapter.

I do not have a high-speed internet connection, but want
to share the dial-up on the XP desktop. Do I have to
install a second LAN card on the XP machine for the
internet port on the router?

Appreciate any recommendations and help.

No second LAN card is needed.

Use the Linksys router as a wireless access point only, bypassing its
router capabilities:

1. Connect the desktop to one of the router's LAN ports. Don't
connect anything to the router's Internet (WAN) port.

2. Access the router's built-in web interface (default address is
usually http://192.168.1.1).

3. Disable the router's built-in DHCP server.

4. Change the router's LAN IP address to 192.168.0.254 to be
compatible with Internet Connection Sharing.

Then, enable Internet Connection Sharing on the desktop's dial-up
connection.
