wireless problems

Hi,

I'm having problems with my wireless connection, I hope
soemone can help!

My current setup:
I have a Netgear wireless dg834g router (with the latest
firmware upgrade).

My desktop has a Netgear WG311 v2 pci card. I also have a
laptop with an Intel proSet 2100 wireless card. Both are
running windows xp (with service pack 1a)

I have enabled 128 bit wep encryption, added the MAC
address of my desktop and laptop's wireless cards to the
allow listf for the router.

The laptop can connect to the router fine with no
problems. However my desktop pc won't connect it just
says not connected and has a cross on the icon for the
connection, under Control Panel > Internet & network
connections > network connections.
When I look at the settings for the connection, windows
has changed the wep key I entered (it is the wrong
length), everytime I enter the key again it promptly
forgets is after I click the OK button.
I have noticed that before I got broadband and had a
dialup connection windows would "forget" the password.
This is truly irritating, I know i can just disable wep
(given the flaws in WEP) but I'd rather not keep my net
completely open!

There is a light at the back of my pc where I have
installed the pci card, this light which I presume
indicates that the card is working or that it
has "reception" is on. I have also typed the
ipconfig /all command and it reports back to me:
Media State: Media disconnected

If I disable wep, I can connect to the wireless network
from my desktop.

I was using the configuration utility that came with my
netgear wg311 v2 but it kept crashing my computer, so I
don't use it.

Can some one please tell me what's going on! Any help
would be much appreciated,

Thanks,
vijay

Make sure that your network authentication method is
correct. Even though you are entering the key, you may be
trying to auth via open mode when the router is looking
for shared. You can check for this by right clicking on
wireless icon, choose to view available networks; choose
advanced, then select your netowrk and choose configure.
Make sure you are using the correct Network Authentication
type.

I hope this helps.
