How do I connect my printer, attached to my desktop computer, to my laptop
with wireless connection? I have a wireless router in order to access the
internet via my laptop.

You need to share the printer. Here's a "how to" for Win XP Home:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814005
(assumes you don't have a third-party software firewall; if you do,
you'll have to configure it to permit file & printer sharing)
(you might want to read all 8 parts of the series)

Your desktop must be powered on in order for the printer to be
accessible. This is one reason why some folks prefer to use a separate
hardware print server or a "network ready" printer, but both of those
are extra cost options. For what it's worth, the hp 6980 is a
reasonably decent color inkjet printer with built-in wireless G network
connectivity for not a whole lot of money:

If you use this printer, or one like it, all you have to leave powered
on is the printer, not the desktop.
