i have been trying to install a wireless router on my 4 year old dell desktop
to use with my new dell notebook but i discovered the usb cable plug on the
desktop is too small for the new usb cable. any suggestions on where i can
get a cable to fit my older hard drive and my new wireless router?

You don't connect your desktop to the router via a usb cable. You connect it
your ethernet card on the desktop to the router via a cat4 or a cat5 cable,
can't remember which it is at this hour.

New routers do support USb connection. The best way to setup your router and
set the Wireless settings is to configure the router accessing it using a
normal ethernet cable. For example, some routers use the default address of
http://10.1.1.138. To access it, connect the cable between the laptop and the
router and type in that address. If the address works you just log in and
start setting your wireless settings and other settings. So, get back to your
manuals and check that default address and look also for the default
username/password.

What about the cable issue?

For solving the USb calbe issue, he can use a converter if both the sizes are
standards, but USB connection is not suggested to be the stable connection
for a PC-router connection since he can access it using the ethernet or the
wireless. In other words, USB is made just to access the router for
configuration only.

thanks for all the replys so far. there is no number next to the connection.
as i said the system is 4 years old and all it has is the symbol for the
connector next to it. it is right next to the phone connection (which is only
for the fax). i have cable for my internet connection. the usb connects from
the modem to the router and from the router to the desktop. i have the
wireless built into the laptop. the usb from the modem to router works fine.
the usb from the router is fine it is just too large to fit into the
connection on the harddrive. by the way, i am a 'she'. so after saying all
that, there is no number next to the connection. is there such a thing as an
adapter to fit the small connection with a larger connection on the other
side to fit the cable?
