i am trying to connect two xp computers on my network ,my desktop is
connected to router vie ethernet cable and my laptop connected via usb
adapter i can get access to aol internet with both pcs , but i cannot seem to
get pc to share files or printers as far as i am aware both pc have been set
up using xp wizard ,different pc names but same network name

If both computers actually do have Internet access, then the physical
connectivity bit is good.

Now you need to look for a misconfigured or overlooked personal firewall, or
other security component. There are several other possibilities too, and any
might be the cause of your problem. Read this article with an open mind.

Or look at "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net
config workstation", from each computer, and diagnose the problem. Read this
article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (download
browstat!):

Is the device you're connecting to truly a router? Given that it has one
Ethernet port and one USB port I don't think it really is - it is far more
likely a cable or DSL modem. You need a real router, connected to the cable
or DSL modem, then with each PC connected to the router.
