Russ

I have read through many posts with similar problems but
can't find any solutions. With the risk of sounding
redundant here goes: Linksys router: desktop XPpro/
laptop xp pro w/ wireless. After a problem with
connecting to the internet w/ both puters miraculously
the desktop after 2nd day connected with no problem. The
wireless still will not sense the router. If the laptop
is "hard-wired" the internet connection is fine. The
problem is when the laptop is wireless:
DNS Suff: blank
Auto ip address: 169.254.39.252
Subnet:255.255.0.0
Def gateway: blank
I know that this ip is not compatible with the router the
router needs an address of 192.168.1.1-254. This is where
I'm stuck.
(too much info/ not enough?)

Russ,

Please provide ipconfig information for the desktop, and for the laptop when
connected wired and then wireless. IOW, 3 ipconfigs please:
Start - Run - "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in
Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

What looks redundant to many folks with the problems often turns out to be
something totally different after analysis. So thanks for not posting your
problem as a reply to someone else's.

Now, please take a deep breath, drink a bit of water and cut down on the
caffeine, and try and describe the problem slowly and coherently.

What model Linksys?

Describe the "problem with connecting to the internet".

From each computer:
1) Ping www.yahoo.com.
2) Ping 66.94.230.33.
Report error messages.

How is the router configured? WEP? WPA? MAC filtering? SSID broadcast on or
off?

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

update: Even though I had done this before, I just
uninstalled all of my network hardware on my laptop and
then reinstalled. Everything seems to be up and running.
Even networking between the computers is working. Is this
just a hiccup in the system? Or should I just leave well
enough alone? This has happened more than once, last time
I reinstalled XP (wanted to do this anyway) and that
worked.

linksys befw11s4 without any of the encryption enabled.
SSID broadcast is on.
I should have posted the info before but wasn't sure if
anyone would take interest. As I did reply previously,
Everything seems to back in order. Just that I would feel
more comfortable in knowing why or how everything
happened. Thank you for your time!

Russ,

Everything looks clean right now. If you're not having problems, not too much
to do anyway.

If your problems start again, post again. Describe your observed problems and
your network, with model numbers, and OS name and version information. And
ipconfig data for each. That's a good place to start, so we know which
questions to ask next.

Cheers,
Chuck
