Wireless Keyboard Connect Problems

I am tryng to connect a wireless USB keyboard and mouse to my computer. It
is a Microsoft Wireless Comfort Keyboard 4000. The mouse works fine but we
have been unable to get the keyboard to work. We have tried the trouble
shooters, internet searches, and anything else we might think of without
being able to get the keyboard to work. Is there someway to determine if
the keyboard is communicating with the puck? Open to any and all
suggestions. It is really confusing the mouse would work fine but not the
keyboard.

Running Win XP Pro SP2 with all current updates. The USB ports are 2.0.
Software installed is 6.1.

Some things to consider.

New fresh batteries installed in the keyboard (in the proper orientation)?
Any lights on the keyboard? I can't find setup instructions for this set on
MS website but my Kensington keyboard/mouse combo has a button on the bottom
of the keyboard to press to "signal" the controller to sync-up. Does it
have a switch on the controller that can turn off the keyboard or mouse?
The Kensington version does.

Follow the instructions supplied to the absolute letter. Any deviation at
all from what is written will lead to frustration and tears..:)

I believe I have followed the 4 steps to the letter. Even though the
batteries with keyboard and mouse should have been new I have tried
different batteries.

What is frustrating is I can connect another wireless keyboard and mouse
with USB puck to one of the computer's USB ports and the keyboard and mouse
work perfectly. This is the second NEW USB wireless keyboard and mouse I
have tried with this computer and I have not been able to get the keyboard
to work from either new desktop set. My issue is I can not figure out a way
to determine what the problem might be. I can go into the device manager
and uninstall the keyboard driver and then restart the computer. The
computer recognizes there is a new keyboard and reinstalls the keyboard
driver so something regarding the keyboard is being sent to the computer. I
can still use help.

Got it working. Finally came across some instructions on Microsoft's site
that directed you press the "connect channel" button on the keyboard while
the green lights are flashing on the puck (receiver). Once I followed those
instructions about the flashing green lights it took about one second for
everything to start working. I only spent about 12 to 14 hours on this "one
second" issue. Hopefully my pain will save somebody else some pain :).

Oh, those darn buttons you need to press.....Glad you got it working. Hope
my "has a button on the bottom

started in the right direction.

Way to go, Bill.

I had the same issues when first connecting my own desktop set. Everybody
does. The instructions I had were complete but I was initially failing to
read every word. It happens
