Wireless Extender for Good Signal?

V

Hi:
There are 5 PCs sitting in the large and same back room. Sometime during
the nite after dinner, everyone starting to use their own PCs, 5 in all,
that seems causing 'weak or law signal' warning popping-up in one of PCs.

As knowing this, I'm thinking of the following product, 'Wireless Extender'
that I saw here, in the Internet.

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1086177&CatId=372

However, I have NO any good knowledge on Wireless, not to mention as to
'how to boost' reception/signal, then
I'd like to know your opinion and suggestion to this product.

Thanks for any help on this.

Which brand/model of router? Which brand/model of wireless cards? What are
the wireless settings? (which Channel, which mode) Any 2.4 Ghz cordless
phones in use nearby ?

I don't think a wireless extender will help you. Wireless extenders are
used to increase the range of the wireless signal and that's not your
problem. From your description, you're running out of bandwidth. This
can happen if one or more of the users is downloading large files, doing
P2P, etc. I've seen that here when one kid is torrenting something or
downloading a huge file and the other kid is doing multiplayer gaming,
and that's with wired computers and a big fat cable connection.

See what everyone is doing and possibly take turns downloading, etc. if
the above is applicable to you. Another way to possibly handle it is if
you can wire some of the computers instead of using wireless.

This really doesn't have anything to do with what operating systems are
on the various computers.

Linksys has routers & wireless cards with "SpeedBoost", these might help in
your situation.

Be sure to read carefully about an 'extender'. You have two signals--one
from the PC to the router and one from the router back to the PC. Increasing
the range/power of one of these paths doesn't help the other, return path.

I think if you have a 54 mbs router and 5 PCs, it won't take too much to max
out the router's throughput. Any chance of hardwiring any of the PCs?

Contact your ISP to increase your download speed!
It will slow down with 5 comps being used, but won't be as noticeable.

Violet,

I don't think you need to boost the wireless signal. You have five
computers running on one subscription from your ISP. You are using all the
bandwidth that has been allocated to you by your ISP. The ISP must manage the
bandwidth used by their customers so that the overuse by one person or
company does not detrimentally affect the bandwidth of other subscribers.
You can purchase a higher speed connection but with the five computers
running at the same time you are going to have the same problem. Download
speed has nothing to do with the amount of bandwidth you are allocated. If
the bandwidth use by your five computers is affecting other customers of the
ISP your ISP will probably reduce your bandwidth further and I agree with
their decision to do so.
I am allowed to connect ten computers or devices to my broadband
connection. However, I certainly would not try to use ten computers at the
same time. Of course, if someone is retired and has nothing better to do than
sit in front of a computer and wait for a page to load or an application to
start I suppose it isn't so bad.
You are causing your own problems. You can solve the problem by
staggering the times you use each computer. If this is not possible you can
always purchase more subscriptions from your ISP and use your other computers
with these additional modems/routers.
Have a nice day.
