wireless dissapearing act

Ok 2nd try

We have 4 pc's on a wireless LAN. In the am we have no problem looking @
each others disks, printers ... . However, usually after a few hours of
inactivity one or two of the pc's will be unreachable. We can ping all the
pc's without any problems. And if we reboot the pc the problem disappears.
What do you have/suggest for tools to diagnose the problem? TIA

Ted,

What specifically do you mean by "unreachable"? Apparently not "unpingable".

Do you mean "invisible in Network Neighborhood"? If so, you have a browser
problem. The browser is not robust enough for a workgroup environment,
particularly on a WiFi LAN.

When the problem occurs again, run "browstat status" from the problem computer,
and from one or two of the ones without a problem. Do they all report the same
master browser? After you reboot a problem computer, rerun "browstat status".

Your master browser should be a computer that's online consistently, and
preferably is wired. With a WiFi network, computers can drift in and out of
connectivity. If the master browser loses connectivity with the rest of the
workgroup, you have a problem.

If the problem relates to inactivity, make sure that you disable "Allow the
computer to turn this device off to save power" on any computer running as a
browser. If the master browser goes offline because of inactivity, you'll see
your problem.

The drives ... are in the network neighbor hood but when we click we get a
message about being unreachable & we may need appropriate permissions ... .I
can get the exact message next time if necessary.

After looking @ some of your links I believe you are speaking about domains.
We are not running on a domain. Perhaps that's why 'browstat status' is not
found when we enter that in a run command? TIA

Ok I should have looked @ more of your links. Currently getting browstat
installed. Will see what that leads to. Thanks.
