Wireless Desktop problems

I have and Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop 1000. Sometimes when I boot up
the computer, wake my computer up from sleep mode, or somtimes it happens
just randomly, my mouse and keyboard just stops functioning. And I know for a
fact that my computer does NOT freeze, because other things continue to work.

I try the connect buttons on the receiver and the mouse/keyboard, that
doesn't work. I'm pretty sure it's not an interference issue (the receiver is
about a foot away from my speaker and monitor, but I never move those things
and it still works most of the time, and freezes sometimes). When this
happens I have to restart the computer.

Also some things I notice before it freezes is that my mouse won't move its
position for about 2 seconds, or if I'm pressing a key on the keyboard, it'll
keep pressing that key for about 2 seconds.

Really annoying stuff. Anyone know what's going on and how I can fix this
for good?

Does the receiver connect to the PC via USB ? - if so, the default
Power Savings on the USB Root Hub may be the cause. Open
Device Manager and expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers
category. Double-Click each USB Root Hub and then the Power
Management (TAB). Check and see if the option box "Allow XP
to Turn off this device to Save Power" is checked.

No, I don't know the answer why it happens. But I do know that it is likely
to be a hardware issue. I myself had the same problem with at least 6
different brands of wireless keyboard / mouse combos, but now that I have
switched to a Logitech I don't seem to have the problem any longer.

Thanks for the reply. Since this happens every 1-2 days, I'll reply back
again if this doesn't work, but it sounds like this could be it :)

So I found 4 "USB Root Hub" and unchecked the box you mentioned. The other
ones that were there (USB Composite Device, VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal
Host Controller x3, and VIA USB Enhanced Host Controller) didn't have a power
management tab, but I hope those don't apply to my wireless desktop.

Well it looks like it froze today. I guess the power management thing wasn't
the case.

Anything else that could be the reason?

For now I'm unplugging and replugging the USB, which does the trick, but
it's still frustrating...

Windows not loading the drivers properly? Motherboard USB drivers out of
date? Is there firmware updates for these products that I couldn't find?
