Wireless connection is disabled when I unplug the power cord.

I am running a new Acer 4420 Notebook with XP Professional.

When I am running on a wireless internet network and unplug the power cord
to take my computer completely wireless, I lose the connection.

Check the power settings for the wireless hardware. It may be set to turn
off the wireless device (albeit an unusual choice) if running on batteries.
